1925 Live @100YearsAgoLive - The Inquiring Photographer asks New York women: “would you [trust] a woman doctor?”
Secretary Marion Kennedy: “No, I wouldn’t have nearly as much confidence in a woman doctor. I prefer the good old fashioned family doctor.”
Housewife Irene Hunter: “Not generally, because women have no experience in the field of medicine.”
Secretary Mrs. Cecil Walsh: “I [don’t trust] either a woman or man doctor. They are only guessing about your ills.”
Bookkeeper Mae Simon: “Not at present. Women are new in the field of medicine, and they haven’t yet contributed anything to medical knowledge. I would have to be convinced of a woman’s proficiency as a doctor before consulting her.”
Secretary Estelle Levin: “Certainly. A woman has studied her profession just as much as a man has, and if she learns the same things, I don’t see why she shouldn’t be as proficient.”
Three black-and-white newspaper clippings from 1925 feature portraits of women in 1920s attire including cloche hats and dresses. First clipping shows two women: one with short hair and glasses identified as Miss Marion K., secretary, and another with bobbed hair as Mrs. Irene Hunter, housewife. Text discusses confidence in woman doctors. Second clipping depicts three women: one with wavy hair as Mrs. Cecil Walsh, and two others in hats as Mae Simon, bookkeeper, and Miss Estelle S. Levin, secretary. Text covers distrust in doctors and womens proficiency. Third clipping shows four women: two with short hair and hats as Miss Rae Braumstetter, stenographer, and others, discussing women doctors experience.
