Saule Omarova testified before the Senate Banking Committee at her confirmation hearing to serve as comptroller of the currency, who is tasked with regulating the nation's banks. Committee members sparred over her qualifications. Republicans criticized her past writings and comments on the financial system while Democrats accused their colleagues of character assassination of the nominee. Professor Omarova is an American citizen who was born in Kazakhstan and raised under Soviet Union rule, and she moved to the U.S. as a college student. Several Republican senators accused her of having Marxist views.
