It is COMMON in Hawaii.
Sometimes as many as four generations live under one roof as a "family." That's why he's referring to - the expectation that kids and grandkids can remain in the home as long as suits them.
Grandparents, parents, kids, grandkids - all have areas of the home reserved for them. Usually there are at least 2 kitchens -- sometimes 3 or more.
Each component of the family has a bathroom and laundry room.
It's really just a cross of an apartment complex with a commune -- where everyone inside is related.
They are a HORRIBLE BLIGHT on long-established neighborhoods in Hawaii. Here is an example below. Just a block from Punahoa School in very upscale Manoa Valley neighborhood. Single family homes all around it. Two on the corner were torn down and these big square three story "Houses" were built that simply maximized the possible space on the lot in a very simple and ugly square floor plan. Built exactly like an apartment but no parking spaces, and all the indoor spaces connect by hallways and doors.
