This Epstein thing reminds me a little bit of my country, Poland. We didn't open widely the communist secret service files right after communism ended in Poland (1989). Instead, only "the chosen few" had access to those files to blackmail their political opponents or delete the receipts of their own collaboration with communists. There were also some "leaks" from time to time, such as the Macierewicz List (1992) and the Wildstein List (2005). However, it has never been published in its entirety and the stench of communist past still hangs in the air. There was also much talk about the potential harm that could be caused to victims if those files were made public. But overall Poland's failure to make all those communist-era files public had a negative impact on Polish politics for many years.
