Governor Gretchen Whitmer @GovWhitmer - Political violence and violent rhetoric are on the rise, stoked by leaders who fan the flames of division. Every elected official has a responsibility to work together to get things done and lead with dignity, respect, and civility.
In America, we do not target or threaten our political opponents with violence. Today's message from the President tears at the seams of those fundamental values.
As governor, I have always called out political violence or rhetoric no matter where it comes from and who it targets. That's what we all must do. We can disagree fiercely, but we must always center our mutual respect for one another.
Most of all, I worry about our kids, who are growing up seeing so much angry, hateful rhetoric and escalating political violence. For them, it's become normal.
It's on all of us, no matter who we are, to embody the values we all share and build the brighter future we all want to see. We must remember that we are a nation of good, kind people. We cannot keep ignoring this kind of language or become desensitized to the violent actions that it inevitably leads to.
Let's work together to turn down the temperature and stay focused on getting things done.
