My daughter was 17 years old. She had been chosen for a school trip from July 9 to July 22, 2022. To go, she was required to be vaccinated. Despite our pleas, she was the only one in our household to get the vaccine, which she received on June 7 and June 28.
She left for her trip on July 9. On July 18, she texted me that she felt sick. We immediately drove from Michigan to New York and met her at the Niagara Falls border in Toronto.
We came home on July 19, our three-year-old’s birthday. We celebrated with cake and ice cream, and Aubrynn and I shared a quiet moment together with a bowl of soup before she went to bed.
The next day, July 20, I took her to urgent care. After waiting for four long hours, she finally sat up and asked, “Did they call me back yet?” — and then collapsed. She went into cardiac arrest before my eyes.
She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital and placed on an ECMO machine. Her condition was critical. Blood flow to her limbs was failing, turning them black. Surgery was impossible because of blood thinners, and infections and kidney failure set in. After relentless fighting, on August 6, we had to shut down the machine. My beautiful daughter, my heart, was gone
