Network Axis Group @NetAxisGroup - On July 31, 1972, five members of the Black Liberation Army hijacked Delta Air Lines Flight 841 (a DC-8 flying from Detroit to Miami). Among them was George Wright, a convicted murderer who had escaped from a New Jersey prison in 1970. Disguised as a priest and using the alias “Rev. Larry Burgess,” Wright and his accomplices forced the plane to land in Miami, where they demanded and received a $1 million ransom - the largest ever paid in the U.S. at the time. In exchange, they released all 86 passengers unharmed but kept the crew hostage.
The hijackers then ordered the aircraft to Boston to pick up an additional flight engineer for the transatlantic leg, before flying 3,000 miles across the Atlantic to Algiers, Algeria. There they sought political asylum as revolutionaries. Algerian authorities quickly returned the plane, crew, and ransom money to the United States but initially allowed the five hijackers to stay.
Four of the hijackers were arrested in Paris in 1976 and served short prison terms in France, which refused to extradite them. George Wright, however, vanished. For nearly 40 years he lived openly in Portugal under the name José Luís Jorge dos Santos, married a Portuguese woman, raised a family, and became a citizen. He was finally arrested in 2011 after U.S. authorities matched his fingerprints to a routine ID card renewal.
Portuguese courts repeatedly blocked extradition, ruling that Wright had legally acquired Portuguese citizenship and that the statute of limitations on his original murder conviction had expired under Portuguese law. He was released from house arrest in 2012 and, now 82, still lives freely in Portugal today - one of the longest-running American fugitives never to be brought back.

New Discourses @NewDiscourses - "The concepts of 'multidisciplinarity,' 'interdisciplinarity,' and 'transdisciplinarity' are forwarded with the clear intention of creating a pretext for bringing activists and activism from the arts, humanities, and social sciences into positions of authority over the natural sciences." -@ConceptualJames
