ArchaeoHistories@histories_arch - Another old photo that shows the lakebed of Lake Nemi in the Alban Hills, Italy. It had been drained between 1928-1932 on the orders of Benito Mussolini to recover the two Roman ships of Caligula that had been sunk in 1st Century AD. The ships and various objects were exposed and recovered, although the vessels were later destroyed by fire in World War II.
This photo shows a bronze hand among the timbers of the second ship (seconda nave). According to an article, "this is one of the two bronze hands capping a longitudinal timber that supported the housing for the side (or quarter rudder in a Mediterranean context). The first had been found by Borghi in 1895."
The lower photo shows the same hand on display in the Museum of the Roman Ships.
