Curtis Sliwa @CurtisSliwa - Recently I spoke with Portland State student journalists and reflected on our early days with the Guardian Angels in Portland. In the early 1980s, Portland was facing a severe crime and drug crisis, with rising homelessness and a growing drug epidemic affecting neighborhoods across the city.
Our volunteers patrolled nightly, walking the streets of downtown, Old Town, the Park Blocks, and the PSU campus, sometimes on bikes, to protect the vulnerable and support those in need.
We also stood up in the face of the Rajneesh cult, which was taking over neighborhoods, intimidating locals, and displacing homeless people from shelters. The Angels participated in a Portland homeless-advocacy march, carrying a flag-draped coffin symbolizing the death of William Henry Allen, a transient reportedly left by the Rajneeshees outside Government Camp, where he died of hypothermia.
After the march, we handcuffed ourselves to the front door of Portland's Hotel Rajneesh, where commune recruits and visitors often stayed when flying into or out of the state, to call attention to the plight of the city’s most vulnerable. Portlanders noticed, often shouting ‘Thank you’ and ‘More power to you’ as we walked the streets in our red berets and jackets.
Today, under the leadership of Lisa Campos, the Portland chapter continues that mission. They patrol the streets, care for people struggling with addiction, support the homeless, and demonstrate every day that service, activism, and standing up for others is what the Guardian Angels are all about.

Cynical Publius @CynicalPublius - I support this woman's right to be an ignorant, hatemongering, lying, bigoted, xenophobic racist and not lose her government job.
But let's not lose sight of the fact that she is an ignorant, hatemongering, lying, bigoted, xenophobic racist.
