His “crime”? Vaguely phrased “influence operations” and “receiving instructions” that supposedly involved interacting with his counterparts from Russia (because politicians never interact with politicians from other countries, you see).
The Baltics seem to serve as a kind of testing ground for the EU’s repression mechanism from media crackdowns to those who deviate from the dominant narrative.
At the same time, this is not the first time that the powers that be removed opposition politicians under the guise of “our democracy”: from Romania to an EU hopeful Moldova.
