Rep. Mike Collins @RepMikeCollins - On this day in history in 1620, a group of sailors from the English ship the 𝑀𝑎𝑦𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 landed at Plymouth Harbor, Massachusetts, where the Pilgrims began to settle Plymouth Colony.
A month prior to reaching Plymouth, the ship anchored in Provincetown Harbor, where 41 male passengers signed the Mayflower Compact, agreeing to create a self-governing colony. That winter, harsh conditions caused the deaths of half the settlers. However, by spring, the Pilgrims made peace with the Wampanoag tribe, and with help from the Native Americans, particularly Squanto, they learned to grow crops necessary for survival. In 1691, Plymouth merged into the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
