You stick your neck out into the political realm because, initially, you think it’s the right thing to do. You’re doing it “for the cause” whether you want to admit it or not. On the right, though, most of your efforts go unappreciated and misunderstood, but occasionally, someone sees the value. Those rare people who “get it” make it all worth it. As you wander out into the political battlefield, you vaguely anticipate a Party that sits in the background to protect you because you are nominally on its side. But of course, on the right, that doesn’t exist. The GOP is generally full of stuffed shirts, waddling cowards, dorks, grifters, and lots of talk. As the political situation drifts towards more open violence, I don’t expect the Party to protect me or you from threats. Maybe it was naive to even have this impression from the jump, but after decades of witnessing the left let loose all hell without any repercussions, you internalize this idea that the same infrastructure will be there for you. The truth is, it is not. If you chose to stump, truthfully, for ideas that align with the GOP, you will be left out to dry, exposed to threats on your life, and barely offered a penance for your work unless you adopt the callous attitude of the left. No one and nobody will protect you should you choose to speak out. Do what you have to do to protect yourself.
