There is a vibrant Deaf community connected to Brown University. Brown has one of the strongest ASL programs in the country, and its Center for Language Studies has long been ahead of its time. The Rhode Island School for the Deaf is located about two miles from the university, and some of its seniors take college courses at Brown while still in high school. Every time I visit, I feel at home.
An ASL interpreter at a live press conference, providing up-to-date information about a public shooting that directly affected members of the community, including Deaf individuals, was critical and necessary. AI-generated and live captions do not provide accurate information in real time during emergencies. Questions like, is it safe to come outside? Has the suspect been detained? are matters of safety, and Deaf people have the right to that information at the same time as everyone else.
And trust me- if an interpreter is not fluent or not qualified, the Deaf community will know and will let you know. There will be no doubt. We spoke up when a fake interpreter appeared in Florida. We spoke up when it happened during the Obama administration. And we will speak up again if it happens in the future.
