The West Siberian Plain stretches from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Yenisei River in the east, covering much of western Siberia. With an area of roughly 2.6 million square kilometres, it is one of the largest continuous lowland regions on Earth. Across this entire expanse, elevations rarely exceed 200 metres above sea level.
This extreme flatness is the result of long term geological stability. The region sits on an ancient sedimentary basin that has been slowly filled with river deposits over millions of years. Repeated glaciations during the Ice Ages further smoothed the surface, leaving behind vast wetlands, shallow gradients, and poorly defined drainage systems.
Because of this geography, the plain contains some of the world’s largest swamp and peatland complexes, including the Vasugan Mire. Rivers such as the Ob and Irtysh flow slowly across the landscape, frequently flooding and shifting course. The flat terrain also contributes to extensive permafrost in the north, which further limits drainage.
Despite its challenging conditions, the West Siberian Plain plays a major global role. It contains enormous oil and natural gas reserves and stores vast amounts of carbon in its peatlands, making it an important region for both energy production and climate processes.
