Champlin: At approximately 2:00 a.m., Boelter arrived at the home of State Senator John Hoffman. Disguised as a police officer and wearing a realistic latex mask, he knocked on the door. When the Hoffmans opened the door, realizing he was an impostor, Boelter forced his way in and repeatedly shot both John and Yvette Hoffman. Their adult daughter, Hope, was in the home but was shielded by her parents and miraculously escaped being shot, though she sustained minor injuries. Both John and Yvette Hoffman suffered numerous gunshot wounds (nine and eight, respectively) but were incredibly lucky to survive after undergoing multiple surgeries.

Brooklyn Park: Shortly after escaping the Hoffman residence and attempting to target other officials not at home, Boelter proceeded to the home of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Around 3:30 a.m., again impersonating a police officer, he encountered Mark Hortman at the door. Responding police officers, having been alerted to the earlier incident, arrived at the scene. Gunfire was exchanged, and Boelter entered the home, fatally shooting both Melissa and Mark Hortman, as well as their dog, Gilbert.
