Ava Flanell @AvaFlanell_ - My fiancée and I have knocked on roughly 600 doors since last weekend and yesterday. I focus on Republican households, but occasionally a Democrat within the family answers the door. In my experience:
• Democrat spouses often gatekeep and prevent their Republican spouses from speaking with me.
• When a Democrat answers the door, the interaction frequently turns confrontational the moment I mention the word Republican, regardless of how polite or respectful I am.
One interaction stood out. I knocked and asked if X was home. When I mentioned that I’m a Republican, the woman’s demeanor immediately changed. She said, “Eww, no. Get the f*** off my property,” and slammed the door. I calmly said, “Alright, have a great day,” and walked back to my car. Moments later, she reopened the door and shouted, “The only reason my husband is a registered Republican is because we lived in Florida and wanted to primary Matt Gaetz!” Then she slammed the door again.
None of this disheartens me; it fuels me. When I took on this role, I knew it would be an uphill battle. No matter the hostility, I’ll keep knocking doors, even when it's cold and there's snow on the ground, because I believe in showing up, listening, and getting to know my constituents firsthand.
