Texas AG Ken Paxton has initiated an investigation into major grocery chains over their practice of misting organic fruits and vegetables with an antimicrobial pesticide called Produce Maxx in-store, without informing consumers.
Produce Maxx is an EPA-registered antimicrobial pesticide whose active ingredient is hypochlorous acid (a chlorine-based compound) present in high concentrations in the concentrate. It is widely applied through misting systems in thousands of U.S. stores to help control bacteria, reduce pathogens, and prolong shelf life.
