And now is the time for war," at which moment he removed his clerical robes to show the uniform of a colonel in the Continental Army and asked for the men in his congregation to join him. About 300 did. He was 28-29 yrs old at that point, the youngest of the eight colonels chosen for the Virginia Line. He would recruit through the Shenandoah Valley, primarily around Woodstock and Winchester, to fully form Virginia's 8th Regiment. He became known as one of the fiercest fighters in the army: the Hessians called him Devil Pete. By the end of the war, he was one of Washington's most trusted generals and was present at the British surrender at Yorktown.
