Former Norwegian PM attempted suicide after name appeared in Epstein filesJanuary 24, 2026
Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland has been hospitalized after a suicide attempt, as authorities in the country conduct a wide-ranging investigation into suspected serious corruption related to documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case.
The investigation began after files from the sagas of the late American pedophile Epstein revealed contacts and possible benefits from Jagland and his family members.
The incident reportedly occurred about a week ago and, according to foreign news sources, the former prime minister's condition is currently serious. The incident came to light as the investigation into him and other prominent political figures continues, following the release of a series of documents related to Epstein.
Norwegian police and the Special Economic Crime Unit, Okokrim, have launched an investigation into Jagland on suspicion of "serious corruption" after finding several documents that appear to show that he and his family traveled to or stayed at properties held by Epstein between 2011 and 2018. Authorities have previously requested that the Council of Europe lift the former official's diplomatic immunity so that the investigation can continue.
Jagland, who served as Prime Minister of Norway in 1996–1997 and later as Secretary General of the Council of Europe and chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee for several years, has denied allegations of criminal responsibility and according to his lawyers is willing to cooperate with investigators, they write. MEDIA.
The investigation also includes a search of Jagland's properties in Oslo and other areas of Norway, while authorities continue to examine whether he received gifts, trips or other favors that may have been linked to his high official positions.
Other cases of the impact of the Epstein files have also been reported in other countries around the world, including arrests and investigations of high-profile public figures, demonstrating the scandal's wide-ranging impact on the international stage.
