According to one version of the story, upon his return to Mandarin, George was shot before his boat even made it to shore. In another telling, he returned to his plantation and was shot while planting trees.
Whatever the version, his body was carried away and later recovered by neighbors, who buried him here in what would eventually become Mandarin Cemetery.
Nearly two centuries later, visitors can still see the grief of a mother who lost her son on a distant frontier, carved in stone.
