>>178824M.A. Rothman @MichaelARothman - VDH: TRUMP IS SENDING VANCE A MESSAGE Victor Davis Hanson is one of the sharpest readers of Trump's body language and rhetoric in the country. And what he's seeing right now is a subtle but unmistakable signal. Trump has started pulling back on the J.D., J.D., J.D. energy — and pivoting to effusive praise of Marco Rubio. Marco is the best secretary of state in history. When asked about Vance, he said Vance is "a little bit less enthusiastic, but enthusiastic." That's Trump-speak for: we have a problem.
Hanson's read on what Trump is communicating: J.D., you have to divorce yourself from these extremist agents. The problem is that Vance's political identity is built on the MAGA base — the same base that Tucker Carlson, Don Jr., and others helped deliver him the VP nomination. Tucker's son works on Vance's staff. And Tucker is now calling Trump's Iran decision "evil" and trafficking in the same regime-change-is-rape rhetoric that embarrassed everyone who repeated it.
Hanson deals with Tucker's unconditional surrender argument directly and efficiently. Tucker suggested that demanding unconditional surrender historically leads to mass rape of the defeated. Trump demanded unconditional surrender of Japan. Douglas MacArthur served as proconsul for eight years. There was no mass rape by Americans. The historical claim is simply false.
Vance faces an impossible position. Trump values loyalty above almost everything. But the people who made Vance politically viable are now publicly at war with the president's foreign policy. Every day that Tucker calls the Iran war evil and Joe Kent's conspiracy letter circulates, Vance's silence looks like acquiescence — and his occasional distancing looks like disloyalty to Trump.
The signal from Trump via Hanson's read is clear: get clean. Distance yourself from the extremists. Iran was necessary, Venezuela was necessary, and we're not abandoning MAGA — but the antisemitic brain rot crowd does not get to define what MAGA means.
That's a message Vance needs to hear. Whether he acts on it determines a great deal about 2028.
