U.S. Naval Institute @NavalInstitute - #OTD in 1945, USS Devilfish became the only submarine to be struck by a kamikaze. Devilfish sighted the approaching plane and attempted to dive but the kamikaze hit the periscope shears and destroyed the radar masts. Water began to pour through a crack in the mast which started electrical fires and grounded out equipment in the conning tower and control room. Devilfish managed to make it to Saipan for emergency repairs before returning to Pearl Harbor.
