Studies linked long-term use to elevated risk of type 2 diabetes: the very condition the drug was meant to prevent downstream.
A 2012 FDA review confirmed the diabetes and cognitive risks. The label was updated.
The drug was not withdrawn. It was prescribed more widely after the label change than before.
Patients continued to report the same symptoms and be told they were coincidental.
