Michael Novakhov @MichaelforNY - Video: I went to the Sleep Inn Hotel in Sheepshead Bay today because the silence from the city is unacceptable.
This site was used during the migrant crisis under Mayor Adams, and at the time, we were told these were temporary measures. Now, instead of returning these locations back to their intended use, we’re seeing them quietly transition into homeless shelters, without informing the people who actually live here.
Let’s be clear: this is a residential neighborhood. Families live here. People deserve to know what’s happening in their own backyard. And yet neither I nor my office have received any official communication about what this building is currently being used for or what the plan is moving forward.
That’s why I’ve taken action. I sent a formal letter to the DSS Commissioner demanding a full accounting of all these sites, inside and outside my district. Where are they? What are they being used for? And why is the public being kept in the dark?
The Commissioner confirmed receipt and promised a follow-up. Now we’re going to hold them to it.
Enough with the backroom decisions. Enough with the lack of transparency. My community deserves answers, and I’m not going anywhere until we get them.

Mike Howell @MHowellTweets - The shutdown hurt a ton of people, and it's the Democrats fault. But Republicans honored the hostage taking. Here's some other points about where we ended up and why Democrats are claiming victory.
Dems take ICE/CBP out of budget process and make it a standalone - the worst situation for future finding, require spending down OBB money (so yes reducing overall ICE budget), put ICE being made whole contingent on a highly uncertain future reconcilation process that could again hold ICE hostage to other funding demands (war) and yes conditions (Rs have signaled support for including many things Dems want and the margins are tight), and the deciding votes will be Cornyn, Tillis, Collins, Murkowski, Cassidy in the Senate and then the large enforcement amnesty caucus (Main Street) in the House which has put name to paper already saying to stop enforcement. Not to mention, not all concessions/reforms are in legislative text. During the past few months there have been several unilateral giveaways: the recognition of the rioters veto in MN and subsequent retreat, the slowing down of enforcement generally and lack of worksite action seems to be setting in, apology tours, Mullin's confirmation hearing where he gave away on the warrant issue and detention facility issue (see also ending the warehouse facility acquisition). Also even in a perfect world where there is an ICE only reconciliation that increases budget, there are operational and legal considerations running on that money as opposed to standard budgets. Expect litigation. And of course what can be made at a 50 vote threshold can be killed at a 50 vote threshold, which is why Dems want ICE/CBP to be in the singularly lonely spot of the agencies that can only be funded via reconciliation, and also why Republicans knowingly set down this path by separating DHS funding in the first place.
These are some of the reasons, but not all, why most people who support ICE were opposed to the Senate's 3AM jam, but are completely changing their mind based on the exact same facts and policies just a few days later.
