A stretch of roughly 100 km is missing at the Darién Gap on the border between Panama and Colombia.
People still travel between the continents, but not by road. Vehicles are usually shipped by boat between Panama and Colombia, while travellers either fly or take boats. Crossing the gap overland means navigating dense jungle, rivers, and swamps, so it is rarely attempted.
This region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the Americas and home to indigenous communities. Proposals to complete the highway have existed for decades, but environmental concerns, the risk of spreading livestock diseases, and political factors have kept it unbuilt.

https://x.com/amazingmap/status/2048843902854312289Amazing Maps @amazingmap - By 1900, European beavers had been pushed to the brink of extinction after centuries of hunting for fur, meat, and castoreum, a substance used in perfumes and medicine. Fewer than 10 small, isolated populations survived across the entire continent.
Over the 20th century, they were given legal protection and deliberately reintroduced in multiple countries. From there, they spread naturally along rivers and wetlands, often going unnoticed at first.
By 2021, beavers had returned to large parts of Europe, especially across Central, Eastern, and Northern regions.
Their return has had a visible impact on landscapes, as beavers reshape rivers, create wetlands, and alter entire ecosystems.
