Kitty Hawk was commissioned in 1961 and is the oldest active US navy ship, based at Yokosuka, Japan and operating more than 70 aircraft.
Kitty Hawk has been participating in the ongoing exercise Tandem Thrust ‘01 in the Shoalwater Bay training area in Queensland, involving more than 27,000 Australian and US personnel, and is in Sydney as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the ANZUS Treaty, the formal Australia/US security alliance.
