Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - CA Senator Alex Padilla & NY Rep. Joe Morelle, the top Democrats on the committees with oversight of federal elections respond: "Purging commissioners just months before the midterm elections and further gutting support for our state and local elections officials is a blatant part of his plan to politicize our elections and enable more unlawful and dangerous election interference."

Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - U.S. Supreme Court today ruled 6-3 that President Trump could remove Rebecca Slaughter (D) as a member of the Federal Trade Commission. Trump fired Slaughter from the FTC in March 2025 before her term was scheduled to end in 2029. The ruling overturned a 91-year-old precedent in the 1935 Humphrey's Executor v. U.S. decision that restricted the president’s power to fire heads of "independent" regulatory agencies. Chief Justice Roberts in writing for the majority in Trump v. Slaughter argued on December 8: "Subordinates who exercise the President’s power are subject to removal by him. Then, and only then, can they remain accountable to the President, and the President to the people."

Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - July 9, 2026: President Trump tonight has reportedly fired the three remaining commissioners of the Election Assistance Commission, an independent bipartisan federal agency created in 2002 to help states administer elections. Democratic commissioners Thomas Hicks & Benjamin Hovland were fired, and Republican Christy McCormick was reportedly allowed to resign. All 3 were confirmed by the Senate by unanimous consent. It's the first firings by Trump at an independent agency since the Supreme Court ruled last month to expand the president’s authority to remove members of independent agencies.

Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - Senate plans to vote by mid-next week to begin work on the Senate Armed Services Commmittee-approved 2027 NDAA defense programs & policy bill, after Thune filed cloture on proceeding to the legislation before the July 4th holiday recess. 60 votes will be needed. Nothing else has been announced.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna @RepLuna - John Thune is now planning on drafting his own version of the NDAA, meaning he is ACTIVELY working to try to block the SAVE America Act. This will now have to be done in conference. A Manager’s Amendment from the Chairwoman of the Rules Committee can force this in once the Senate sends us their version.
