The Ways of A Gentleman @Gentleman_Ways - One of the most misunderstood phrases in American history is "the pursuit of Happiness."
When Thomas Jefferson wrote those words, he was drawing on a long philosophical tradition that understood happiness as something much greater than pleasure alone. It was about cultivating virtue, exercising self-mastery, fulfilling one's responsibilities, and living a life of purpose and character. Happiness did not mean giving in to every desire, but the reward of living well.
Today, many people have reduced "the pursuit of happiness" to mean, "Do whatever makes you feel good." That is a huge misunderstanding. Freedom was never intended to become a license for self indulgence or vice. The American Founders believed that a free people could remain free only if they possessed the virtue to govern themselves.
A free society depends on people who first learn to govern themselves.
Let's be those people.
