My son’s flight wasn’t boring because solo night flights are easy. It was boring because he has a few hundred hours in the cockpit white knuckled with an instructor and a few thousand hitting the books. A very senior widebody captain for a major airline works 8–12 days/month. That’s it. On long-haul flights they literally hide extra pilots in secret bunk rooms built into the airplane. The captain who sounded so alert & in command during takeoff? There’s a decent chance he’s dead asleep snoring like a buzzsaw by mid-flight. And if, at any point in the flight, the junior pilot has one moment of “excitement,” an alarm goes off, and the senior pilot wakes up immediately. You WANT the senior pilot asleep mid-ocean. Our aviation system is safer than car travel BECAUSE guys like @MCCCANM and @BuzzPatterson worked harder than you can imagine in their 20s & 30s. It’s safe because now they are senior pilots who only work part-time. The American Work Ethic was never my mom, a senior executive at 75 working long days managing a huge team jumping through Medicare hoops. She spent her 20s as a visiting nurse in the Bronx. She deserves a medal but instead gets yelled at by state health inspectors for every single paperwork mistake the ridiculously large team they need for “compliance” makes. Nuclear silo duty is the most boring job in the military for a reason. That’s the problem with NGOs & USAID & ESG & DEI. These things add no value and are a massive distraction from the core issues.
