>>191125 White House Press Pool Reports @WHPressPool - Pool Report #1: Bessent gaggle
Morning. I’m your print pooler today.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gaggled briefly with reporters outside the White House after a television appearance.
He commented on bonds, saying he was confident they would continue to decline. “We’ve got a spike in oil prices today that I don’t really understand,” he added. “Our announcement is for economic action, and I think that the economic action will mean that oil prices will come down sooner.”
Asked about the national debt crossing the $40 trillion mark, and how it can be reversed, he said it’s a big number but it’s smaller when you look at publicly traded amounts. “We’re going to have to grow our way out of this.” He suggested that the numbers are off because of tariff refunds. “But with the section 301 tariffs, I am confident that we will be back to…the same level if not higher of tariff income for last year.” He hit the Biden administration over the deficit he says the Trump administration inherited.
On the size of the refund that target received for tariffs – nearly $1billion – and what it says about the amount of Chinese/foreign-made goods that retailers are selling, he accused the Democratic attorney general who filed against the Trump administration of corporate welfare.
“This is a corporate bonanza, which I said it would be at the time,” Bessent said.
Just at that moment, a downpour began out of nowhere, as reporters shouted questions about an “Economic D-Day” and Iran. It stopped a minute or so later, right after Bessent left.
