Treasure Secretary Bessent - America measured prosperity the wrong way 🇺🇸
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent used the 2026 Reagan National Economic Forum to argue that the United States spent too long judging economic success by what consumers could buy cheaply instead of asking what the country could still produce for itself.
In his May 29 speech, Bessent said America had “forgotten production” by focusing too heavily on consumption. His sharpest line was that the country measured abundance “at the checkout counter rather than the factory gate,” while talking about GDP without paying enough attention to what made up that growth.
Bessent’s argument went beyond jobs or factory output. He said manufacturing represents a reservoir of national capability: engineers, welders, logistics networks, plant managers, and workers with the practical knowledge to solve problems in a crisis.
That matters, he argued, because losing too much domestic capacity can leave a country dependent on foreign supply chains for strategically important goods. He pointed to the scramble for medical equipment during COVID and the war in Ukraine as examples of why production capacity cannot simply be rebuilt overnight.
