F.A. United States Attorney Bill Essayli @USAttyEssayli - Arrests by our Homelessness Fraud and Corruption Task Force
Federal charges were announced today against three people employed by L.A. County homeless nonprofits in separate cases alleging misuse of millions in taxpayer funds intended to combat homelessness.
Michael Young is charged with misappropriating more than $7.5 million through sham vendors, using public funds for a $48,000 trip to Tahiti, more than $140,000 to remodel a vintage Chevrolet, and more than $1 million to open a nightclub and adjacent bingo hall.
Lakya Malone is charged with accepting more than $180,000 in bribes and kickbacks involving referrals and “ghost” participants.
Donye Mitchell allegedly obtained approval for a $1.2 million grant through false representations.
Separately, Alexander Soofer agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud and money laundering, admitting he pocketed at least $2 million in taxpayer funds.
The scale and brazenness of these fraudsters expose a profound failure by the State of California and Los Angeles County to safeguard public funds. We will follow the money and prosecute those who exploit the American people for personal gain.
