Responding to Pope Leo XIV's appeal in Magnifica Humanitas to build forms of cooperation and a culture of shared responsibility, the USCCB’s Administrative Committee met with representatives from a variety of tech firms and specialists in artificial intelligence. The conversation centered on keeping any AI system at the service of humanity and addressing the real and present dangers such technology presents. The Administrative Committee established the Bishops' Task Force on Preserving Human Dignity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, chaired by Bishop Oscar Cantú of @DioceseSanJose, which will promote policies and practices that protect human dignity, religious liberty, democratic institutions, workers, families, and vulnerable populations. More than a dozen bishops also went to Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to consider meaningful safety guardrails on artificial intelligence and support for legislation protecting children online.
