The cost is asymmetrical. NYT reporters don't need security costs. Independent journalists do. My NoBlogs website exposed a global network of doxxing networks, but that's only a tiny faction compared to what's happening on Telegram/Signal. People like @johnkonrad get their lives ruined over the tiniest bit of wrongthink.
And the costs are orders of magnitude worse for those who actually go on the frontlines, like Nick Shirley, @nicksortor, and @MrAndyNgo. They literally circulate pictures in Signal groups and provide training on how to physically beat them up without leaving any proof, and how to get free legal representation afterwards.
Giving even 1 independent journalist the institutional backing will send a message to everyone else.
