Corrine @OopsGuess - Video: There is a very small moment in this video that I find unusually tender.During Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan’s visit to the U.S. National Archives, Xi is speaking with Melania Trump while Peng is trying to look more closely at an exhibit.
She does not interrupt him.
She simply places a hand lightly at his waist.
Xi turns his head just slightly, understands immediately, and quietly shifts forward to make room for her.
No words.
No performance.
No exaggerated affection.
Just the kind of instinctive coordination that exists between two people who have spent a very long time beside each other.
What I like most is how restrained it is.
Peng’s gesture is gentle and almost private.
Xi’s response is immediate and equally understated.
For a few seconds, the symbolism of power disappears.
What remains is something far more ordinary:
a wife asking for a little space without saying a word,
and a husband understanding her before she has to ask twice.
There is something deeply Chinese about that kind of tenderness too — not displayed, not announced, simply understood.
