Neanderthal extinction may have been caused by sex, not fighting

"...While about 2% of the genome of all living people from outside Africa is derived from Neanderthals, there is very little evidence that this process went the other way.

A new paper, published in the journal PalaeoAnthropology, raises the prospect that interbreeding with our ancestors would have reduced the number of Neanderthals breeding with each other, leading to their eventual extinction.

Though only 32 Neanderthal genomes have been sequenced to date, leaving it possible that the lack of Homo sapiens DNA in their genome is actually a quirk of sampling, the authors hope advances in DNA sequencing technology will be able to resolve this hypothesis by making more genomes available.

Professor Chris Stringer, the Museum's Research Leader in Human Evolution, authored the new paper alongside colleague Dr. Lucile Crété.

Chris says, "Our knowledge of the interaction between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals has got more complex in the last few years, but it's still rare to see scientific discussion of how the interbreeding between the groups actually happened."

"We propose that this behavior could have led to the Neanderthals' extinction if they were regularly breeding with Homo sapiens, which could have eroded their population until they disappeared."

Nancy Pelosi's former neighbor is questioning why a violent home invasion triggered no alarms – as security experts condemn the apparent ease with which David DePape broke in, and predict federal protections will be extended to her family.

Residents of tony Broadway Street in San Francisco are used to fleets of black SUVs surrounding the Speaker's red brick mansion 24/7, a heavy police response to any disturbances, and even their computers getting scrambled by alleged security measures to protect the nation's Number Three.

So when Marjorie Campbell read that her old neighbor had to call 911 himself while negotiating with a hammer-wielding madman, she was deeply perplexed.

'There were black cars outside that house, particularly up on Normandie Terrace, all of the time,' the 66-year-old, who lived opposite the Pelosis for a decade, told DailyMail.com.

'I don't distinguish between her being there and not being there. There were always multiple cars.'


It didn't take too long before the curb that runs down Broadway right in front of her house was painted red. The protesters were not allowed to protest where the curb was red. So you know that they [Pelosi's security] were all over that,' she said.

The former neighbor said residents' electrical equipment would sometimes malfunction from alleged jamming to prevent spying on the speaker.

'We had a computer in our kitchen that just didn't work on the internet very well. And I was told that because of the level of monitoring equipment at that residence,' she said.

'There was monitoring equipment to make sure that residents couldn't be spied on remotely from any place in the neighborhood, which involved something that interfered with our computer.'

Campbell recalled eating with her family at their local restaurant, Jackson Fillmore, one night when the place was taken over by bodyguards.

'This entire security detail came in because the Pelosis wanted to eat dinner there. There were three or four black cars outside, a huge detail.

'When she was there, there certainly was a huge presence. And my impression was that the house was constantly monitored.'

I don't want to take your knowlege for granted so I'm going to ELI5 this as best I can. Captcha is specifically designed to prevent automated spammers. This spammer defeated that with ease, meaning a certain level of sophistication Captcha was modified and it was effective, but spammer became more sophisticated and defeated that too. Then the 2FA was tried and defeated (although programmatically that would not be hard). Then the 2FA via email seemed to work until Jim turned everything off with what I expect was an undisclosed workaround, which has yet again been defeated.

The reason for documenting the above is to illustrate the level of sophistication. How does one defeat Captcha programmatically? Human bot farm solving captchas?

You don't seem to understand the level of sophistication at work here, and the amount of effort and funding it takes to defeat mechanisms specifically developed to prevent such malicious efforts.

Conspiracy theories and mockery of the attack on Pelosi were heavily promoted by prominent conservative pundits, including Donald Trump Jr., Rep. Clay Higgins, and the hosts of Fox News’ Fox & Friends. The hashtag “PelosiGayLover” trended after newly christened Twitter owner Elon Musk posted a link to an article from the Santa Monica Observer, a notorious right-wing rag known for peddling false information, claiming the attacker was actually Pelosi’s same-sex lover. There’s nothing to substantiate the claim, but that has not stopped Trump from privately inquiring in the past few days about the viral gay-lover conspiracy theory, the source tells Rolling Stone.

Trump’s assertion that the broken glass at the Pelosi’s home indicates someone was trying to “break out” is easily debunked. Fans of crime dramas may be shocked to learn that forensic glass analysis is a little more complex than “glass inside” or “glass outside.” According to an affidavit released by San Francisco investigators, the glass on the Pelosis’ home was apparently laminated, making it more difficult to shatter. Alleged attacker David DePape told investigators that breaking through the door was a “difficult task that required the use of a hammer,” as the glass was designed to not easily break.

The former president’s penchant for indulging bigoted conspiracy theories and unfounded false-flag rumors was a hallmark of his career and his presidency. Except this has all the hallmarks of a DDOS because it is a DDOS.

DDOS protection is all about pattern recognition, and this DDOS has a pattern. What I haven't looked at is if every image has the same pixel count (pattern easily blockable by DDOS protection) or if they are each generated randomly (making pattern recognition more difficult).

Not sure why you keep insisting this is an amateur, but one that can use AI/ML to defeat capture (costly and sophisticated, not amateur), has all the hallmarks of DDOS but is not DDOS and so on.

Even Forrest Gump knows this is a well funded team of sophisticated people, and bonus, it all stops on November 9.

First, the conventional security measures that a website would have typically aren’t as effective on mobile apps. UCP discussing creating its own sex offender registry despite SCOC decision

Alberta's government has raised the idea of creating its own sex offender registry after a Supreme Court of Canada (SCOS) decision was made to forego adding repeat sex offenders.

On Monday, Minister of Justice Tyler Shandro said the decision by the SCOS will make the country more dangerous.

"The decision to end automatic registration on the sex offender registry will make it harder to ensure these crimes are not repeated," Shandro said in a statement.

On October 28, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down a 2011 change to the Criminal Code and called it unconstitutional to require the automatic addition of sex offenders' names to a registry.

The change in Canada's Criminal Code came during former prime minister Stephen Harper's leadership and took the decision away from judges making it mandatory that all offenders have their names added to the National Sex Offender Registry. Those with two or more offences would remain on the registry for life.

Friday's five-to-four ruling now permits anyone who has been added to the registry since 2011 to apply to have their status changed.

However, it appears Alberta's government may not agree with this decision and has discussed creating its own registry for the province.

Ministry of Justice Press Secretary Ethan Lecavalier-Kidney told the Western Standard via email, "In the interest of protecting Albertans, this idea has been raised and is being discussed."

"A sex offenders registry is a key tool for law enforcement to prevent sexual violence," Lecavalier-Kidney said.

Shandro said he believes an automatic listing on the sex offender registry helped build a comprehensive database for law enforcement and acted as an important tool in helping monitor sexual offenders in our communities.

"Every Albertan deserves to feel safe from those who would cause them harm," Shandro said.

“This decision will have an outsized impact on women, who are overwhelmingly the victims of sex crimes. We are calling on the House of Commons to reconvene immediately and invoke the notwithstanding clause to restore automatic registration to the sex offender registry.”

Lecavalier-Kidney said Alberta's government hopes the federal Liberal government will do the "right thing" and have the House of Commons invoke the notwithstanding clause to restore the automatic registration to the sex offender registry.
