NYC Marathon won by KENYAN after BRAZILIAN collapsed(code talking?, prolly nothing but maybe something)
A New York City Marathon runner collapsed Sunday after leading for much of the race, with two Kenyans, Sharon Lokedi and Evans Chebet going on to win.
Brazil’s Daniel do Nascimento collapsed about six miles from the finish line.
Lokedi, 28, from Kenya, was the women’s champion with a time of
2 hours, 23 minutes and 23 seconds. It was the first time she has ever run the New York City Marathon.
Chebet, 33, also from Kenya, was the men’s champion with a time of 2 hours, eight minutes and 41 seconds.
Chebet, who won the Boston Marathon this year, took the lead after do Nascimento collapsed.
Do Nascimento had a huge lead for most of the race, but took an 18 second break to use a Porta potty and began to fade when he returned. The elite runner collapsed soon
Medical personnel rushed to help do Nascimento, who appeared to be in serious distress following his fall.
Temperatures were unseasonably high Sunday at 72 degrees with a 67 percent humidity, prompting officials to put additional misting stations and water stops on the route to keep runner’s hydrated.
Reed Fischer, a 27-year-old professional runner from Boulder, Co. told The Post at the finish line that the heat made the course incredibly difficult and was likely what caused do Nascimento to collapse.
“It was a day to run smarter rather than harder,” Fischer said. “You could feel it by mile two. I mean, you’re sweating way earlier than you would otherwise be sweating. So, it hurts pretty much the whole time.”
Fischer finished with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 20 seconds and was the second American and 10th overall.
The first American professional runner in the women’s race to cross the finish line was Aliphine Tuliamuk, who finished with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes and 18 seconds. She finished in seventh place. Three American women placed in the top 10.
