Kids don't have inherent value. It's easy to make more. Making an adult out of a kid however takes time and energy, a lot of it. Knowledge and responsibility too - can be done by "we'll figure it out" basis but results can vary.
On the other hand "age = wisdom" is total bs. There are plenty of old people who learnt nothing from the lessons life tried to teach them. It needs wisdom to have wisdom, not time...
The most valuable age bracket is the young adult, who are old enough for not just making kids but to see the responsibility in that and have some idea how to do it. They are also the strongest of the workforce and can learn fast from mistakes. So they are the ones who needed to be preserved if times turn bad to connect it to your musings.
