There's this reality telly show on teh History channel: Alone.
They put ten people down at a remote place such as Patagonia, separated from each other, all with a designated area to stay. They have camera equipment to film what they do, couple of mandatory items (such as a tarp and sleeping bag, some clothing) and ten selected items they can pick from a list.
The one who can stay and survive the longest gets $500K. Couple of season with 100 day $1mil challenge.
Anyway two things gets them: being alone, and not eating. All have backgrounds in outdoors living and such, and they practiced in many things from fire building to trapping. But one thing I never hear they practice is going without food for a longer period of time.
