I argued it may be due to the other perma-valuable commodity "meaning". Meaning is a limited resource, you can only have so many heroes and so many idols and so many countries, cultures, etc... in our current minds. Larger populations devalue the meaning of those individuals.
Maybe on an unconscious level, that drives their preference.
They may also believe space exploration and further technological development to be meaningless.
