The same also goes for everything else I think. There is always a causality or root cause or purpose of each thing happening or coming into existence. For example what is the purpose of waifuism or posting waifus on an imageboard. The purpose that I found is that it correlates to beauty which correlates to art and art correlates to God or religion (art is the search for godliness or something meaningful); which can be called God or something meaningful if you don't believe in God
For example I have always been fascinated by anything beyond the realm of our current existence or perception. And anything that is created as art is the attempt of venturing into that unexplored area, which is vast and endless most likely
So each person is searching for God no matter if they believe in him or not; we carry the longing for something out of the mundane in us, but most people quench this thirst with simple pleasures that are easily available, which then stops that desire for a while until it then reactivates itself like a thirst or a hunger
