Let me reformulate it:
There's 2 levels to this question, the exoteric (mass, religion) and the esoteric (individual, religious experience).

At an individual/esoteric level, the faith crisis is just a stage in the life of sufficiently smart people, who have had them and resolved them since ancient times, Plato, Aristotle, etc...
The catholic esoterics literally run circles on Nihilism, and at an individual level through the right effort and esoteric religious practice they can resolve it for most people individually.

At the mass societal scale is the true "faith crisis" problem, and the problem is that we don't have methods to resolve nihilism for masses, the watered down religion is not sufficient, and exposing people to deeper information just confuses them and creates chaos.
