I think debating "social conservatism" is a bit of a red herring. It seems to me the most straightforward social rule to prevent this kind of thing would be "middle-aged men should not have sex with teenagers", which is not really something that has been enforced historically, but *is* part of the liberal #metoo-consensus that has been emerging recently.
