I think the reason for the effectiveness is that many words cannot be read character for character, as the reading changes depending on what other characters are placed before and after each character. This means the way to read a word forces one to first look at the whole set of characters, which means to take in the entire energy form, before associating it with its proper meaning and phonetic reading.
This order of operation differs from purely phonetic writing, which can be read mostly character for character. Even if some individual character can be read differently, like how C is sometimes K, CH is sometimes soft, sometimes hard. These are still phonetic only, and the word image is learned to have only a phonetic meaning. The letter A for example is never read to mean "upside down bull's head" as the original pictogram is said to be. This meaning has been detached, so this interpretation step is skipped, which leaves out certain neural pathways.
