I never watched that far in Evangelion, got bored after the first 12 eps with the weekly monster set up. The manga was much better, unfortunately they stopped translating them so I only read the first 9 or so books. That was more zen natured in style. Can't say that scene even bothered me, I didn't pick up on this being anything in particular, since he is giving artificial breathing when he panics. It was just a weird element.

Maybe it didn't have more to give after this. For me the scene were Rei and Shinji make tea together was the peak of it all.
