There is no saying that one way is wrong and the other is rignt. Some people will probably create servitors in the image of the gods as they learn of them. So telling them that the gods are external would then be to tell that person a lie. While at the same time someone else may connect with external entities, and telling them that it's a mere creation of the mind, would also be wrong.
