VHS lacked the patent for a technology which removed flickers by allowing the tape reader to actively move sideways to compensate for uneven tape speed. But they pushed for home video instead, getting lots of low budget movie companies to release what came to be called "video violence" directly on VHS in the 80s. I don't think most of it was porn, even if that helped.
