It's not the end of the world if you power off and its probably safer for a laptop due to their poor cooling but if you are thinking of long term then you are more likely to have drive wear and eventual failures from repeated power ups and offs than running powered. I don't know how much more wear that is though, just know its more. Could be just a few percentage points higher for all I know.
