>The Vilina Vlas spa hotel, seized by Bosnian Serb forces in May 1992, became the headquarters for the “White Eagles” paramilitary unit led by Milan Lukić. While officially a detention center, it functioned systematically as a rape camp where an estimated 200 Bosniak women and girls were subjected to sexual slavery, torture, and execution.
>Survivors testified that women were chained to radiators or furniture, their hands bound at all times except during assaults. The torture extended far beyond sexual violence; captors burned victims with cigarettes, cut them with knives, and ripped flesh from their mouths. In acts of extreme degradation, guards threw pieces of bread into rooms, forcing bound women to catch food with their teeth like animals. One survivor recounted being raped continuously from noon until 9:00 PM while a captor held a knife to her throat. Another witnessed Lukić slaughter her sixteen-year-old son before taking her to the hotel for repeated rape. Mass rapes were also reported to occur in the hotel’s swimming pool.
>Jasmina Ahmetspahić, abducted by Lukić, was held and raped for four days. Her father, Mehmed, spent the entire day frantically pleading for her release but failed. Facing continued torment, Jasmina jumped from the third-floor window on June 14, 1992. A fourteen-year-old girl also jumped to her death to escape the abuse.
>Despite witness testimony confirming Lukić personally raped detainees, the ICTY did not convict him specifically for sexual violence, sentencing him to life in 2009 for other crimes against humanity. This omission was heavily criticized by Amnesty International and survivor groups. Conversely, lower-ranking perpetrators like Željko Lelek (16 years) and Oliver Krsmanović (18 years) were convicted for rapes at Vilina Vlas. Today, the site operates as a tourist spa without any memorial, despite campaigns by survivors to install a plaque acknowledging the atrocities.
