A lot of unions outside of some related to physical work have had their influence reduced or traded away their rights for better conditions/pay. Some unions have struck grandfathered agreements for older staff that have significantly better than what is on offer today. Some unions are still strong and do a good job for workers.
The strength of being in a union requires everyone to hold out and not take the next best agreement on the table. There are not as many people with this fortitude these days. Slightly more pay, let's accept this offer ASAP!
